By Dr. Lloyd Fielder

Since chiropractic’s inception in 1895 there has been an understanding of the crucial relationship between the integrity of the spinal column and the function of the nerve system as a whole and specifically the tissues and organs that they supply. The interrelatedness of the spine and nerve system–even way back then–was evident in its simplest of understandings.

It was this basic observation that led to the profession of chiropractic focusing on the function of the nerve system and how it is the main source for transmitting the inborn intelligence and information one requires to express their fullest health potential. In essence, to the degree one maintained a healthy nerve system, one free of interference and aberrant communication in relation to the spine, is to the degree one was able to express the fullest potential for life and health.

Chiropractors influence the function of the nerve system through the spine and spinal subsystems thereby allowing the body to increase its own inborn ability to self-regulate and self-heal.

Why Don’t M.D.s Recognize the Importance of Nerve Function?

Fast forward 110 years later. I can’t tell you how many times I have a person in front of me to whom I explain these simple workings of the importance of nerve function in the role of their health. I know I am not the only chiropractor who hears this next line all too frequently, “Why didn’t my M.D. tell me that?”

My answer is usually something along the lines of, “Maybe they just simply don’t know and you should explain it to them.” In truth I do not know the answer, but my best guess would be that these understandings were firstly and continue to be associated with chiropractic and chiropractors. Their biasness professionally is that chiropractic ideas have not come from any medical research or any allopathic physician and therefore are not valid.

Well fret no longer; thanks to a wonderful M.D. who spent many long hours in the lab we have results that support the basics of the chiropractic view of a life and death relationship between the nerves and the function of the organs as they relate to the spine.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you:

The Winsor Autopsies

Henry Winsor, a medical doctor in Haverford, Pennsylvania, asked the question:

“Chiropractors claim that by adjusting one vertebra, they can relieve stomach troubles and ulcers; by adjusting another, menstrual cramps; and by adjusting others conditions such as kidney diseases, constipation, heart disease, thyroid conditions, and lung disease may resolve–but how?”

Dr. Winsor decided to investigate this new science and art of healing–chiropractic.

Dissections

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Winsor was inspired by chiropractic and osteopathic literature to experiment. He planned to dissect human and animal cadavers to see if there was a relationship between any diseased internal organ discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae associated with the nerves that went to the organ. As he wrote:

“The object of these necropsies (dissections) was to determine whether any connection existed between minor curvatures of the spine, on the one hand, and diseased organs on the other; or whether the two were entirely independent of each other.”

University Permission

The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies he dissected a total of 75 human and 22 cat cadavers. The following are Dr. Winsor’s results:

“Two hundred twenty-one structures other than the spine were found diseased. Of these, 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature. Nine diseased organs belonged to different sympathetic segments from the vertebrae out of line.

These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide … for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments and several organs may be supplied with sympathetic (nerve) filaments from the same spinal segments. In other words, there was nearly a 100 percent correlation between minor curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs.”

Diseases examined:

•Stomach Diseases
All nine cases of spinal misalignment in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9) had stomach disease.

•Lung Disease
All 26 cases of lung disease had spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic spine.

•Liver Disease
All 13 cases of liver disease had misalignments in the mid thoracic (T5-T9)

•Gallstones
All five cases with gallstone disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic.

•Pancreas
All three cases with pancreas disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracics.

•Spleen
All 11 cases with spleen diseases had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracics.

•Kidney
All 17 cases with kidney disease were out of alignment in the lower thoracics.

•Prostate and Bladder Disease
All eight cases with kidney, prostate and bladder disease had the lumbar (L2-L3) vertebrae misaligned

•Uterus
The two cases with the uterine conditions had the second lumbar misaligned.

•Heart Disease
All 20 cases with heart and pericardium conditions had the upper five thoracic vertebrae (T1-T5) misaligned.

Dr. Winsor’s results are published in The Medical Times, November 1921, and are found in any medical library.

That’s right, folks: 1921.

Modern Research Also Shows Benefits of Chiropractic

What is incredible is that there is much more research, a majority of it done in recent years, that shows the benefit of chiropractic care in many aspects of health such as the immune system. Wouldn’t you want to know that chiropractic care could allow your family’s immune systems to be as healthy as they are meant to be?

The latest research shows people without any symptoms at all who receive chiropractic care IMPROVE their health.

That means there is valid scientific documentation that as you incorporate chiropractic care into your lifestyle you continue to get healthier even if you don’t have any current symptoms!

Now let me just acknowledge that many in our profession of chiropractic educate people to know that judging their health based upon symptoms is not wise and that even in the absence of symptoms someone can be quite sick. I am not disagreeing with that at all.

However, I am simply shifting the focus onto creating health, wellness and wholeness. We have no choice in that life is a continuous process that goes on with or without us. We do have a choice in either taking a passive and unaware role in the processes of creating a downward spiral of sickness and disease, or an informed and active one in creating an upward spiral of health and vitality. Which would you choose for yourself? How about for your child?

How Many of us Receive Chiropractic Care?

Our profession has been educating, talking about, asking, and sometimes pleading with people to get checked for nerve interference by a chiropractor for over 100 years. Over 85 years ago the medical community itself validated chiropractic’s reasoning with science.

Sadly to this day only 10 percent to18 percent of our country’s population has gotten under some type of chiropractic care according to various statistics.

We continue to get sicker as a country that encompasses something like 5 percent of the world’s population–who consume around 60 percent of the world’s pharmaceuticals. This concept of better health through better drugs is not working and, more importantly, it is killing us. Conservatively speaking, the third leading cause of death in this country is the medical profession.

So whether you have a disease, an illness or symptoms, are without a symptom and want to create more health, or want to find out more about your body, the state of your spine, if you have nerve interference and more importantly how much or little you are expressing your health potential, you could benefit from a chiropractor.

Many of my colleagues across the country and world give health care classes, new patient orientations and speak to all sorts of groups. Please see the wonderful chiropractor locator and schedule yourself an appointment–or at the very least find out when the chiropractor nearest you is giving a talk about health, wellness and chiropractic as it relates to you and your family’s lives.

I promise you it is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your family, now that you have started to understand how the body actually works!

Dr. Lloyd Fielder is the chiropractor who regularly adjusts me to optimize my nervous system. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived most of his life in the town of Oceanside on Long Island. He completed his undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Albany before receiving his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at The National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois. He also has Bachelor of Science degrees in both biology and human biology. He has successfully owned and operated Schaumburg Chiropractic Wellness Center in Schaumburg, IL for the last seven years. Dr. Fielder commonly refers to his office as “one that is driven by possibilities to improve a person’s life and health.” For seven years Dr. Fielder has transformed the practice into one that is focused on the inborn innate ability of each person to achieve and express their full health potential.

Just In Case

April 30th, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

We buy life insurance and medical insurance just in case…, right?  On some level this is a good thing.  We don’t want to leave our loved ones behind with the added worry on having to figure out how they can afford to bury us on top of having to grieve over us passing.  As for medical insurance, we don’t have to worry about how to pay the large hospital bill after an accident when we have missed work all because of it.

Chiropractic is about a hundred years old and still misunderstood.  I want to clear it up for a couple of you that might still be confused.  This again is only my opinion - doesn’t mean much other than to me and my patients.  If I could get the general public to change their view of chiropractic as bone doctors to doctors of the nervous system that would be the first step in the right direction.   If you knew what I know, if you could borrow my brain for a second, if you went to chiropractic college - there would be lines of people lining up out in front of every chiropractic office.  There are some people who see chiropractors today and don’t know the totalaty of what they are “buying.”  It is our job as chiropractors to educate you as to what it is and what you are getting in an adjustment.  The only reason you see models of spines and pictures of x-rays in our office is because it is the means by which I can contact and make a difference on the nervous system.  It is the spine the houses the nervous system.

One of the things you are getting, when you are under chiropractic care, and may not be aware of it, is faster healing compared to that of your co-worker/not adjusted counter part, if you were both in the same accident.  Chiropratic is becoming known as preventative medicine.  You should definitely see a chiropractor first.  If there is no change in your condition you should then consider a different route.  Each condition and time for which relief should be felt is different for everyone.  For some people it will be one adjustment that makes them feel better.  At most, I would give it four weeks to feel a difference.  You and the doctor should have a conversation about your progress at that point if you haven’t seen/felt any.  Have the doctor take out your original intake form and initial exam to make comparisons with.  In relation to insurance, chiropratic is something to have just in case.  At this point, until  I tell you more about what I know about it - you might just have to trust me.

“Sciatic” Pain

April 17th, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

Ok, I am going to talk about this again because it keeps on coming up.  It keeps on coming through the door.  If you think you have sciatic pain or you’ve been told that you do by your medical doctor I am going to tell you what to do to help get rid of the pain.  I have shared on an individual basis with some of you that come in complaining of it.  I thought I would share it with more/with as many that want to read about it.  Some people have true sciatica while others might have a problem with their piriformis and have piriformis syndrome.  The piriformis muscle sits in the middle of each buttock.  This is how it can appear on either side.  The muscles starts at the sacrum (a part of your spine) and ends (attaches to) the top of the femur (what you may call the hip bone or top of leg bone).  This muscles function is to rotate our leg out.  If we do this action too much, possibly because our hips are rotated, the muscle begins to tighten up.  The sciatic nerve does make this muscle move.  The nerve takes different paths in each one of us.  For some of us the sciatic nerve may go over, under or through the muscle.  Under normal conditions the nerve should innervate (give instruction to the muscle to move) and move on past it to innervate other muscles lower down in the leg.  If the muscle is too tight, abnormally functioning, the nerve with act up by giving us that signal of radiating pain down our leg.  You should still go to see a chiropractor to get your hips straightened out so that the muscle doesn’t continue to tighten up.  There is something you could do to the muscle to “calm” it down, stretch it out and keep the pain from returning.  This is how you do it:  Start with lying on your back.  If the pain is primarily on the right side.  Cross the right leg over your left, placing your right ankle on the upper part of your left knee, creating a figure four.  Then bend your left knee bringing your left knee (that is carrying your right ankle and leg) up to your chest.  The best part I have found to hang on to (for best results) is pulling the left bent knee towards yourself with both hands by placing hands on top of that knee or if you can between that same bent knee.  I hope you understand what I am trying to describe here.  You can look up stretches of piriformis muscle, I am sure, by now on YouTube for a visual.  If it still doesn’t make sense come in and I’ll show you.  This can keep the pain away for some of you at least until you can get in next to get adjusted.  We really do want you out there living a happy healthy life.

Chiropractic from Head to Toe - Calluses

April 3rd, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

So, let’s talk about your feet.  They are the foundation of your structure that is holding you up.  You need to take care of them.  You at least need to take a look at them and pay attention to them.  They may be trying to tell you something.  It’s understandable for them to hurt after a long day of work especially if you are standing on them all day.  If you have calluses on your feet it is also normal but should be looked into a little further.  Calluses appear on our feet as a protection against repeated friction and pressure.  They show up on flat portions of our feet that are weight-bearing.  The body toughens the skin in these areas to give the body protection and more support in the area it feels like it’s lacking.  Calluses may cause feet to ache or burn or to be tender.  They may appear because of ill fitting (tight/too big) shoes or high heels because of the pressure being put on the balls of the feet.  People with no arch are more prone to forming calluses.  But let me tell you this so that you consider going to a chiropractor.  If your spine is misaligned, your hips are rotated or you body is not balanced - do you think you would be putting more pressure on one foot than the other?  Putting more weight one one leg than the other?  Do you have a calluse on one foot and not the other?  Do your shoes wear more on one side compared to the other?  If so, something is wrong and it can be fixed.  For body inbalances come in and see us.  For calluses, here is how you can take care of them - natural home remedies:

Take a soak. While eliminating the source of the problem is essential, the sharp pain of a calluse may demand immediate relief. Soak the affected foot in a solution of Epsom salts and warm water, then apply a moisturizing cream and wrap the foot in a plastic bag. Keep the bag on for a couple of hours (while you watch television or read, for example). Then remove the bag and gently rub the corn in a sideways motion with a pumice stone. Bear in mind that soaking will provide temporary relief, but it is not a cure.

This will take care of the issue short term.  For you to ward them off permanently you may have to see a chiropractor!

Have a great weekend,

Dr. Munoz

Think You Have Sciatica? Think Again.

March 30th, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

A lot of people come in to the office thinking they have “sciatica.”  Either they heard from their friends what it is supposed to feel like or their medical doctor has diagnoses them with it.  I wanted to bring some light to the subject.  Medical doctors will want to perform massively invasive, open back surgeries.

Description of Sciatica

Sciatica is a layman’s term for a pinched nerve that can cause pain that runs from the buttocks down the back of the leg.

The sciatic nerve is about an inch or so long in the buttocks made of multiple spinal nerves. When people commonly refer to sciatica it is not necessarily a problem of the sciatic nerve, it’s a problem of the nerve when it is being pinched as it exits from the spine from a herniated disc or a bone spur

As chiropractors we have seen sciatica also be caused by subluxations, a misalignment of the spine that creates a
radiculopathy, pressure on the radicular nerve (nerve root) and rotation of the hips.  You might just have Piriformis syndrome that presents itself in our bodies and is very similar to sciatica but should be treated differently.

The causes of subluxations are sometime unknown to the patient or are caused by direct trauma.  Subluxations in terms of sciatica are a result of prolonged external pressure on the nerve, and pressure on the nerve from nearby body structures. It can also be caused by entrapment — pressure on the nerve where it passes through a narrow structure. The damage slows or prevents conduction of impulses through the nerve.

Signs & Symptoms of Sciatica (How you might feel when you show up to the office):

The sciatic nerve can also be injured by fractures of the pelvis or other trauma to the buttocks or thigh. Prolonged sitting or lying with pressure on the buttocks may also injure it. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, can typically damage many different nerves, including the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve may also be harmed by pressure from masses such as a tumor or abcess, or by bleeding in the pelvis.

Symptoms of sciatica include sensation changes, numbness, decreased sensation, tingling, burning and pain in the buttocks, down the back of the legs, the back of the calf or the sole of the foot. Sciatica can also cause weakness in the legs, knees and feet and in severe cases can cause loss of mobility.

No one is minimizing how you feel.  This is a serious issue and you may need surgery.  What I want you to do is think about the choices you have to “fix” it.  Before you go the traditional medical/surgical route what I would do if I were you is to see a chiropractor and see if they can get the pain to go away.  Try chiropractic first.  Although we don’t only go  pain in regards to how well you are doing, in this case you could determine if the chiropractic treatments are working/helping based upon your level of pain.  In other words, if the pain decreases in this case, I would think you would agree that something is being done to your body that is bettering the situation and may take you further away from the need for surgery.  My first recommendation is that you have a discussion about your progress with your current chiropractor if you are not seeing the results you were looking for.  I would even suggest that if one chiropractor/series of chiropractic adjustments are working for you to give chiropractic another chance through another chiropractor.  It may be the type of chiropractic adjustment or the individual chiropractor’s way of case management that didn’t work and not necessarily the whole chiropractic approach all together.  In other words, don’t throw away the baby with the bath water.  We are all very different.  I am suggesting you try another one and even explain to the new/second chiropractor what the situation is.  I guarantee you that the second chiropractor will give you great care and attention in hopes to get relief for you so that you don’t “leave” chiropractic all together.  After all, in the end you always have the medical, traditional, surgical route to go if both attempts get no results.

Just trying to help you out with some choices - think about it,

Dr. Munoz

Chiropractic and Nutrition

March 24th, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

Hi Everyone,

Thought I would share some tid bits about nutrition.  As your chiropractor the primary thing we are all after is looking at correcting/adjusting the structure of your spine in order to get a properly functioning central nervous system and entire body.  Being that we are already addressing something other doctors aren’t, some of us will address other factors going on in your life that is affecting your health, like your posture, excersise, nutrition, for those of you that are interested in losing weight, the essential curves of your spine, etc.  I know you hear a lot from the media but I would like to be a source of information to you.  Today I will talk about nutrition.  I don’t think your medical doctor talks to you about it and I don’t know how many dieticians or nutritionists you know.  Here I go to make an attempt to make your choices easier when you go to the grocery store.  If you change one thing it will be better than none.

Elaine Magee, MPH (Master Public Health), RD (Registered Dietician) says, eating a healthy diet can ward off chronic diseases in her article, “Food Mistakes That Can Get in the Way of Healthy Eating.”  Other things she said were because the best fruits and vegetables for us are the crispier ones, the fresher the better.  For those of us that can’t go to the store everyday she says we can have frozen fruits and vegetables readily available to us by keeping our freezer stocked with them.

When we go to the store try and buy those things that only “God made” and not man made processed foods.  Those things that are processed should be of more healthy choice, examples are whole grain bread, pasta, tortillas, hot dog buns as well as things with no trans fats and that do include olive oil.

As Americans, we eat out way  to often.  It is probably why we are more obese than other countries.  If you want to find out where you are on the BMI Chart in comparison to others and calculate your BMI go to http://men.webmd.com/weight-loss-bmi.  We don’t know what is going into our meals when restaurants make our meals.  Prepare for cooking at home with the frozen meats, fruits and vegetables as stated before.  Prepare with fully stocking your pantry with whole wheat pasta, brown rice, cans of tuna, and jars of marinara sauce.  Try and have breakfast daily.  Use the frozen fruit to make a smoothie in the morning.

Hope you take some/one bit of advice and put it to use.  A small change and can make a huge difference, like eating in one more meal a week than you already do.

Take care of yourself,

Dr. Munoz
