A handful of walnuts each day significantly lowers breast cancer risk

September 9th, 2011 . by admin

by John Phillip
(NaturalNews) Researchers from Marshall University in West Virginia report in the journal Nutrition and Cancer that small amounts of walnuts eaten daily can significantly lower the risk of breast cancer in women. Walnuts are a naturally great tasting source of healthy Omega-3 fats, minerals, vitamins and protein that have long been associated with good health. Interestingly, it is not only the potent dose of Omega-3 fats that are responsible for the risk reduction, but also a synergistic effect between multiple nutrients provided by the nut. Scientists now confirm that eating two ounces of this super food each day can significantly lower your risk of developing this insidious killer disease.

The study was conducted using mice that are genetically predisposed to develop breast cancer tumors. Lead researcher, Dr. Elaine Hardman set out to determine the effect of a typical diet and a walnut-enhanced diet through an entire lifespan. Scientists examined dietary nutrition supplied by the mother through conception and weaning and then by eating walnuts directly. Mice are frequently used for this type of research because they follow similar patterns of breast cancer carcinogenesis when compared to humans.

Dr. Hardman found that the group whose diet included walnuts from conception to late life developed breast cancer at less than half the rate of the group consuming a typical diet. In addition, the number of tumors and their sizes were significantly smaller. Of the results, she commented: “These reductions are particularly important when you consider that the mice were genetically programmed to develop cancer at a high rate… we were able to reduce the risk for cancer even in the presence of a preexisting genetic mutation.”

Researchers noted that they were unable to determine if the cancer prevention benefits were the result of deletions or additions to the diet. Adding healthy Omega fats from walnuts displaced unhealthy fats and balanced Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratios to lower systemic inflammation and oxidized LDL cholesterol levels that result in cancer development. Other studies including walnuts have shown that there are multiple health benefits achieved from the unique blend of fats, vitamins (especially vitamin E) and minerals in the flavorful nut.

The result of this study continues to add to the wealth of scientific evidence that natural nutrients provided by an array of ’super foods’ significantly contribute to our health. Dr. Hardman concluded: “Food is important medicine in our diet… the results of this study indicate that increased consumption of walnuts could be part of a healthy diet and reduce risk for cancer in future generations.” It’s easy to add two ounces of walnuts (about 14 halves) to your daily diet to prevent breast cancer and a host of other chronic diseases.

Breast Cancer Types and Self Exam

April 7th, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

I am going to start of by going over the anatomy of the breast.  There are lobules, ducts, fat tissue, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and blood vessels.  Each breast has sections called lobes.  There are about 15 to 20 of them in each breast.  Each lobe is made up of smaller units called lobules.  At the end of every lobule exist tiny bulbs that produce milk when lactating. Ducts are thin tubes that link the lobes, lobules and bulbs.  Multiple ducts lead to and excrete the milk through the areola.  Around the lobules and ducts is fat.  The muscle of the chest lies under the breast tissue and over the ribs.  Breasts also contain blood vessels, lymph vessels and lymph nodes.  The lymph vessels carry colorless liquid called “lymph,” to and in between lymph nodes.  The lymphatic system is the continuous chain made up of these lymph nodes and the lymph within the lymph vessels.  You can find a bunch of lymph nodes in the pit of your arm, above your collarbone and in the chest.  All breast cancers can be categorized into two different types.  1) Ductal carcinoma, beginning in the lining of the ducts or 2) Lobular carcinoma, growing in the lobules.

Please perform your monthly self-exam.  Here is how to (from American Cancer Society 2009):

ng in their 20s, women should be told about the benefits and limitations of breast self-exam (BSE). Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any new breast changes to a health professional as soon as they are found. Finding a breast change does not necessarily mean there is a cancer.

A woman can notice changes by being aware of how her breasts normally look and feel and by feeling her breasts for changes (breast awareness), or by choosing to use a step-by-step approach (see below) and using a specific schedule to examine her breasts.

If you choose to do BSE, the information below is a step-by-step approach for the exam. The best time for a woman to examine her breasts is when the breasts are not tender or swollen. Women who examine their breasts should have their technique reviewed during their periodic health exams by their health care professional.

Women with breast implants can do BSE. It may be helpful to have the surgeon help identify the edges of the implant so that you know what you are feeling. There is some thought that the implants push out the breast tissue and may actually make it easier to examine. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding can also choose to examine their breasts regularly.

It is acceptable for women to choose not to do BSE or to do BSE once in a while. Women who choose not to do BSE should still be aware of the normal look and feel of their breasts and report any changes to their doctor right away.

How to examine your breasts

  • Lie down and place your right arm behind your head. The exam is done while lying down, not standing up. This is because when lying down the breast tissue spreads evenly over the chest wall and is as thin as possible, making it much easier to feel all the breast tissue.
  • Use the finger pads of the 3 middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right breast. Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of the finger pads to feel the breast tissue.
hand  self exam
  • Use 3 different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissue. Light pressure is needed to feel the tissue closest to the skin; medium pressure to feel a little deeper; and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. A firm ridge in the lower curve of each breast is normal. If you’re not sure how hard to press, talk with your doctor or nurse. Use each pressure level to feel the breast tissue before moving on to the next spot.
  • Move around the breast in an up and down pattern starting at an imaginary line drawn straight down your side from the underarm and moving across the breast to the middle of the chest bone (sternum or breastbone). Be sure to check the entire breast area going down until you feel only ribs and up to the neck or collar bone (clavicle).
breast self exam instructions
  • There is some evidence to suggest that the up-and-down pattern (sometimes called the vertical pattern) is the most effective pattern for covering the entire breast, without missing any breast tissue.
  • Repeat the exam on your left breast, using the finger pads of the right hand.
  • While standing in front of a mirror with your hands pressing firmly down on your hips, look at your breasts for any changes of size, shape, contour, or dimpling, or redness or scaliness of the nipple or breast skin. (The pressing down on the hips position contracts the chest wall muscles and enhances any breast changes.)
  • Examine each underarm while sitting up or standing and with your arm only slightly raised so you can easily feel in this area. Raising your arm straight up tightens the tissue in this area and makes it harder to examine.

This procedure for doing breast self exam is different than in previous recommendations. These changes represent an extensive review of the medical literature and input from an expert advisory group. There is evidence that this position (lying down), area felt, pattern of coverage of the breast, and use of different amounts of pressure increase a woman’s ability to find abnormal areas.

See your doctor if you feel something abnormal compared to last month.

Milk Doesn’t Do A Body Good

March 25th, 2009 . by Dr. Munoz

Hi Everyone,

Want to know just how bad milk is for you?  This is what I got from reading an article by Will Hively called, “Worrying About Milk” found in the August 2000 Magazine Discover:  Organic and organic raw is better than the regular stuff on they are selling us on the shelves.  That milk is coming from cows that are exposed to pesticides, antibiotics, and bovine growth hormones.  Some of us are lactose intolerant, which consists of symptoms of bloting cramps and diarrhea after digesting dairy products.  Those in charge of the milk industry have been selling it to us under the pretenses that it is good for our bones.  It doesn’t even do that.  You would have to drink 5 gallons of milk a day to get the amount of calcium you need to strengthen your bones.  There is more calcium in some vegetables and legumes than in cow’s milk.  Vegetables like broccoli, kale  and brussels sprouts have lots of calcium.  I know… you are saying “ew… brussel sprouts” or “I see them at the market in the spring time but I wouldn’t begin to know what to do with them.”  I found you a good recipe.  We had a rule in our family.  You have to try something once and then say you don’t like it.  I think you should try it once, give it a try and decide.  Here it is:

Brown Butter Sauteed Brussels Sprouts

Level:
Easy
Serves:
4 servings

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds Brussels sprouts, cored and leaves removed
1 gallon salted boiling water
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon caraway seeds
Pinch cracked black pepper
Pinch salt
1/2 lemon, juiced

Directions

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the Brussels
sprouts and blanch, about 1 minute until bright green.

In a saute pan, add butter, caraway seeds and cracked black pepper. Melt butter until browned.

Drain the Brussels sprout leaves and toss into butter mixture to coat. Season with salt and lemon juice and
serve.

Try it and let me know what you think.  I will try it too.  I have been meaning to.  I used to eat them as a child.  I think I like them.

More about milk:  We are the only species that drinks milk of another species into adulthood.  We should take a clue from nature.  Cow’s milk is linked to liver cancer in rats.  It’s related to the amount of casein in the milk.  Breast and prostate cancer are prevalent in areas of the world milk is consumed.  Breast cancer is rare in parts of the world where they don’t drink milk at all.  Miller, from the Dairy Council, says there are studies that say milk assist in bone growth, reduce blood pressure, and reduce the risk of colon cancer.  Sorry I ended with the opposing research.  I know you must get that a lot.  I think someone from the Dairy Council might have something to gain.  I will let you make up your mind.  Altough it might be true, what Miller said,  I would keep cow milk consumption to a minimum or again like I said earlier in the article, buy organic raw milk.  Try that too and let me know how things go.  We have a patient’s son that was what his mother called “addicted” to milk.  When she switched it to the organic kind he drinks less.  It makes you wonder what is in the regular milk sold at the grocery store.  She has also tried the raw milk but found it to be expensive, $8 a half a gallon!

Talk to you later,

Dr. Munoz
